What is longevity and functional medicine?
Conventional medicine is built around disease. It diagnoses conditions once they have declared themselves, and manages symptoms once they have taken hold. What it rarely has the time to address is the territory in between: the years, sometimes decades, during which the body is moving in the wrong direction without yet crossing a clinical threshold.
Functional medicine asks why a symptom has arisen rather than which drug will manage it, tracing the hormonal, metabolic, environmental and lifestyle factors driving it. Longevity medicine applies the same thinking across a longer horizon, using the current science of healthy ageing to slow what accelerates decline.

Longevity and functional medicine draw on a wider range of testing than a standard consultation allows. Every strand below is used only where your presentation calls for it.

Longevity and functional medicine work demands time that standard appointments cannot provide. Your initial consultation with your doctor is a dedicated clinical conversation covering your full medical history, your current health concerns, your family history, your lifestyle, your goals, and any previous investigations or treatments you have undergone.
Where relevant, a pre-consultation blood panel is arranged in advance so that meaningful data is available from the outset. Depending on the depth of investigation required, additional functional testing is recommended following your first appointment.
Chronological age and biological age are not the same thing. Biological age, measured through epigenetic markers such as DNA methylation patterns, reflects the rate at which your cells and tissues are actually ageing. It is a more clinically meaningful indicator of long-term health risk and vitality than the number of years you have lived.
We use validated biological age testing to establish your current epigenetic age and to identify the lifestyle, nutritional, hormonal, and metabolic factors driving acceleration or deceleration of that process. This forms the foundation of a personalised longevity plan aimed at measurably slowing biological ageing over time.

We investigate metabolic health in depth, using fasting insulin, HbA1c, lipid subfractions, inflammatory markers, and hormonal assessment alongside your clinical presentation. Treatment is personalised and may include nutritional intervention, lifestyle medicine, targeted supplementation, and hormonal correction where appropriate.
The gut microbiome, the vast and dynamic ecosystem of microorganisms inhabiting the digestive tract, influences immune function, hormonal metabolism, inflammation, brain health, and metabolic regulation. Exposure to environmental chemicals, including heavy metals, pesticides, plasticisers, mycotoxins, and other persistent pollutants, is an underappreciated contributor to fatigue, hormonal disruption, neurological symptoms, and metabolic dysfunction. Cumulative toxic burden accumulates quietly over years, and standard investigations rarely assess it.
We offer environmental toxin testing through our diagnostics service, including mycotoxin testing and organic acids analysis, and develop personalised detoxification protocols to support the body’s clearance pathways.

How functional medicine differs from conventional investigation.
Functional medicine does not replace conventional medicine. It extends it.
Where conventional assessment identifies the presence or absence of diagnosable disease, functional investigation explores the continuum of biological function that precedes disease, identifying patterns of dysfunction before they cross clinical thresholds and before they cause irreversible harm.
This means using a wider range of tests, applying different reference standards, taking a longer and more detailed clinical history, and spending considerably more time with each patient than a standard NHS or private GP appointment allows. It means viewing the body as an integrated system rather than a collection of independent organ systems, and recognising that symptoms in one area almost always have roots in processes occurring elsewhere.

Consultation fees.
The Schoeman Clinic operates as a self-pay private clinic. Longevity and functional medicine consultations are not routinely covered by health insurance. Where we refer you for further specialist investigations or appointments, those referrals may be eligible for reimbursement depending on your policy.
Consultation fees do not include laboratory testing. Testing costs vary according to the investigations selected and will be discussed at your initial consultation.
