Dr Sonia Tsukagoshi

Longevity & Functional Medicine Specialist

GP & Certified Health Coach

Dr Sonia Tsukagoshi is a longevity and functional medicine specialist with nearly 20 years of NHS clinical experience and one of the most distinctive training backgrounds among clinicians working in preventative and functional medicine today.

Her medical career was built across the full range of NHS general practice: long-term conditions, acute care, complex multi-system presentations and the kind of patients who have been passed between specialists without anyone ever looking at the whole picture. It is exactly the clinical terrain that prepared her for the work she does now.

What sets Dr Tsukagoshi apart is the breadth of her thinking beyond medicine itself. She holds a Masters in Medical Anthropology from SOAS, a discipline that examines how culture, identity, health beliefs and social context shape the way people experience illness and engage with care. In a field where patients are too often treated as a set of results rather than a person, this gives her a rare capacity to understand not just what is happening physiologically, but why it is happening and what it would genuinely take to change it.

That conviction has taken her far beyond the consulting room. She founded and chaired the WONCA World Special Interest Group for Integrative Medicine, building a global network of GPs united by a shared commitment to preventative and whole-person care. She has also served as an executive member of WONCA Europe and held leadership positions within the Royal College of General Practitioners, contributing to international work on primary care, cultural competence and integrative approaches to health. Her formal qualifications include the AFMCP from the Institute for Functional Medicine, the Diploma of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (DRCOG) and a Diploma in Fertility, Sexual and Reproductive Medicine, reflecting a breadth of specialist training that extends well beyond conventional general practice.

Her additional qualifications in coaching, psychology and yoga reflect a clinical philosophy that conventional medicine rarely has the structure to support: that behaviour, environment and belief are not separate from health, but central to it. She approaches each patient with that understanding, tailoring care to the person rather than the protocol. As a certified health coach, she is equipped to support not just the clinical picture but the practical, human work of lasting change.

Dr Tsukagoshi has a particular interest in midlife health, metabolic wellbeing, stress-related illness and sustainable behaviour change. She works with patients who want to understand the deeper drivers of how they feel, and to build health that is genuinely resilient rather than symptom-managed.

Known for her calm, grounded and compassionate style, Dr Tsukagoshi is passionate about helping patients make sense of their health in a world dominated by confusion, extremes and misinformation. She joined The Schoeman Clinic because the methodology matches her conviction: that treating the whole person is not an alternative approach, it is simply good medicine.
