Low free testosterone concentration as a potentially treatable cause of depressive symptoms in older men

A study from the University of Western Australia looked at men aged 71 to 89 and found that those with clinically significant depression were much more likely to have low free testosterone levels. This association remained even after accounting for physical health issues, smoking, body weight and cognitive status. The findings imply that older men with persistent low mood might benefit from testosterone screening and, where appropriate, consideration of testosterone supplementation under medical supervision.
